The Unique Mandate Reference (UMR)

What is a UMR?

The UMR (Unique Mandate Reference) is a unique identifier assigned by the creditor to each SEPA mandate. It allows the bank and creditor to uniquely identify each debit authorization.

What are the UMR requirements?

Maximum 35 characters. Only letters (a-z, A-Z), digits (0-9) and special characters: / - ? : ( ) . , ' + space. A UMR cannot be reused once assigned.

What are the best practices?

Use an identifying prefix for your organization, add a sequential number and avoid special characters. Example: CLUB-OLEIROS-00001. Easy to identify and search.

Can I reuse a UMR?

No. Once a UMR is assigned to a mandate, that reference cannot be reused, even if the mandate has been revoked or expired.
